COVID-19 has redefined a lot many aspects of our day to day lives with our work life being one of the hardest hit ones. A new culture, or to put it out there a little more strongly – a new norm has been settling into the lives of the labour force one which is known as WFH or Work from Home. A survey that was conducted by Deloitte uncovered a few truths about why an employee would want to go back to the old way of working and the results were quite fascinating. Comradery and a sense of teamwork was the first and foremost aspect that employees missed and study even shows that having your colleagues in your proximity can be beneficial for your own productivity. Some of the other joys included the comfort of having one’s on workstation and the personal touch that it brings, control over their surroundings (not having their kids crying in the background!), and strangely enough some people even missed the commute!
How is the comeback going to take place though? Employers need to think about social distancing, sanitation, occupancy rates and a lot more. The office spaces have witnessed a change in the layout post COVID. Businesses that have adopted open layouts in the past may continue using large tables to serve multiple workers, chairs will need to be staggered around the tables. Hence, fewer people can be accommodated in the same office. Business where work from home is not a feasible option, might invest in newly designed desks that create a safe distance between employees or redesign the tables in their space to accommodate the new guidelines. This is most cases can mean needing a new space plan to modify the existing space or taking larger space to safely accommodate the same number of employees. However, this in no way means that open floor plans will no longer be preferred as open floor plans are much easier to clean and limit the amount of surface areas employees will touch. Open floor plan where you can open up windows would also assist in improving office ventilation. Flexibility in the work environment will no longer be as an amenity, but as a must-have in the jobs going forward.
With a need to reduce the density of offices, a hybrid mode of working seems to be the way forward and more employees will be allowed to telecommute. Workers from home can communicate with workers who are at work and this will raise the demand for acoustically sound meeting rooms that can act as an AV room. This sort of flexibility will have to exist moving forward.
With an increased demand for a more structured office space and a uniform remote working infrastructure that meets the current specifications, companies are looking to outsource their office space requirements in order to avoid the hassle.
